Jeffrey Guterman (; born April 26, 1958) is an American mental health counselor, educator, and author. He is author of the book, Mastering the Art of Solution-Focused Counseling, which was published by the American Counseling Association (ACA) in 2006 (ISBN 1-55620-267-9). A second edition of this book was published by the American Counseling Association in 2013 (ISBN 978-1-55620-332-9). Guterman obtained a B.A. in psychology from Boston University in 1980. In 1985, he obtained an M.S. in counseling psychology from Nova Southeastern University. In 1991, he received an M.S. in family therapy from Nova Southeastern University. In 1992, he was awarded a Ph.D. in family therapy from Nova Southeastern University. In the 1980s, Guterman was influenced by rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) and received personal psychotherapy, training, and supervision in the model from its founder Albert Ellis. In the 1990s, Guterman developed a solution focused brief therapy model called solution-focused counseling. Solution-focused counseling is an integration of solution-focused principles and techniques, postmodern theories, and a strategic approach to eclecticism. Guterman has applied Barbara Held's applications of the process/content distinction as a theoretical basis for a strategic eclecticism in solution-focused counseling. His 1994 article, “A Social Constructionist Position for Mental Health Counseling” published in the ''Journal of Mental Health Counseling'' (JMHC) started an ongoing debate on the topic of postmodernism in the JMHC through 2000 and at workshops held at the ACA's conferences in 1996 and 1999.
